The United States mission in Nigeria has reacted to the Federal Government’s suspension of the operation of twitter in Nigeria in a statement on Saturday June 5th, the mission said the suspension is at variance with the 1999 constitution which guarantees freedom of expression.
The Nigerian constitution provides freedom of expression. The government’s recent #Twitterban undermines Nigerian’s ability to exercise this freedom and this sends a poor message to its citizens, investors and business.
Banning social media and curbing every citizens ability to seek, receive and ipact information undermines fundamental freedom of speech. As President Biden as stated, our need for individual expression, open public conversation and accountbility.
